Olé, Olé, Olé, Oh shut up...
Oh joy...The World Cup is coming. Pros: A couple of weeks of really good football, played at the highest level by athletes at the peak of physical fitness. Fabulous supporters dressed in utterly ridiculous but wonderfully bright national colours. Fantastic and utterly unexpected upsets and nail-biting matches that could go either way. Cons: At least a month of the most inane, idiotic, infantile crap being played on the radio. How many England World Cup songs are there now? And how many mention 1966? Hell, how many mention "two world wars and one world cup"? And any last vestige of respect I had for Tony Christie (well, Walk Like A Panther was a good song) is gone. The only good world cup song I've heard? Del Amitri's (I know, don't start) "Don't Come Home Too Soon". A brutally honest, but hopelessly touching ditty. Which clearly fell on deaf ears when we were utterly obliterated 3-0 by the mighty - nay legendary - Morocco. Sigh. Sometimes I realise that The Daily Show isn't actually that funny. Not the Jon Stewart bit, or the jokes - I mean the content. Isn't someone prepared to sue the ass off of Fox News for breaching some sort of law? Anyone? Maybe I should pre-empt drowning my sorrows by watching Eurovision. Dave xx p.s. apologies for American readers thinking "huh? Who cares". And to Argolam, for having to put up with being European for at least one night of the year.
