A shaggy dog story. You know when you have a few weeks of unrelentingly dry weather, part of you thinks "well, it can't last" or "I wonder who's getting the bad stuff?" Well, turns out it won't last and no-one's getting the bad stuff - the heavens have been saving it all up and have decided to release it over your head in one go. How else do you explain me actually having to go the long way home after a puddle appeared that was so damn big it even had tides? Seriously, for an hour there the rain was so heavy Byres Road had turned into a river. Still, makes a nice change, doesn't it? I like the sound of this book - as much for the conceit of calling it "Bareback" (to suggest themes of bigotry and prejudice and something not a little perverted) as anything else. Wow, but Tony Blair is full of crap - Hezbollah kidnapped two guys to make Israel look like the bad guys? So them wanting prisoners released had nothing to do with it? And Israel blowing the crap out of hundreds and leaving thousands homeless hasn't swayed anyone's opinion at all? Aye right. Want to hear my theory? This is a cheaper way of the US (and therefore Britain) shooting-up the Middle East in order to get more sympathetic governments installed in the region. Iran has kinda faded into the background of US foreign policy, primarily because it'd be a hell of a lot easier if Israel did their job for them. Dave xx
